TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
AUDIE MURPHY
Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who I may have inadvertently insulted in an earlier training inspiration entry.
You see, back when I said that Arrhichion was hands-down the toughest mother f**ker that ever lived, I neglected to mention that he was, in fact, tied for that distinguished honor with Audie Murphy.
If you are ever stuck in the gym, trying to slog through the last few sets of your leg workout…or worse still, if you are only a couple exercises in and already feel like bitching out and going home. Ask yourself, “what would Audie Murphy do?” Eddie Murphy would party all the time. But Audie Murphy would kick your ass, sling you over his shoulder, do the rest of your workout while also towing your body weight, carry you home, sprint back to your gym, do your full workout two more times, and then walk around the gym kicking everybody’s ass, but not before handng each of them an M-60 to at least give them a fighting a chance.
Audie Murphy was an unbelievably decorated American WWII soldier, literally the real-life Rambo, though you wouldn’t have thought it to look at him. By the end of the war, he was credited with killing 240 German soldiers as well as destroying 6 tanks. He received the Medal of Honor and 32 more medals and citations, several of them from countries other than America.
He is perhaps best remembered for the following encounter (one of his many feats of heroism). When his unit was defending a key piece of real estate during the war, with its numbers depleted to 19 out of 128, a German regiment (including the aforementioned 6 tanks) arrived to blast them to kingdom come. Reinforcements were not coming anytime soon, so Murphy and his men fought from a trench, mostly getting annihilated for their courage.
Having managed to cripple one of the tanks, however, Murphy ran out of the trench to the tank (which was on fire) and took its .50 caliber machine gun and literally pulled a Rambo IV, singlehandedly mowing down everything in sight that was not an ally. This lasted for about an hour, until he ran out of .50 caliber bullets and, having essentially won the battle, returned to his trench to hold their position and await the truckload of medals that were on their way.
