TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
BOLO YEUNG

Today’s training inspiration (right) is a man who is not terribly well-known in North America, but who has made a significant contribution to many disciplines, from martial arts to cinema to bodybuilding and strength training.

Though few will give him his due, “the Beast from the East” Bolo Yeung can be largely credited as the innovator who combined martial arts and bodybuilding in what would later become a formula for success in Hollywood.

This paradigm was perhaps best employed by Jean-Claude Van Damme, who rightfully cast Bolo as his villain across the screen on more than one occasion.

Bolo Yeung was a close friend of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, with the two also appearing on screen together, in addition to their martial arts training. Bolo’s success as a martial arts film star followed a successful career as a professional bodybuilder in Asia and also a reign as China’s powerlifting champion.

Now in his 70s, and a master of many disciplines related to fitness, athletics and training, Bolo continues to weight train daily and is currently the manager of the Taipei bodybuilding team.

Well, Bolo would be out there giving it 100% on all fronts, but today I’m just going to do a bit of moderate cardio cross-training to keep advancing while hopefully giving the stubborn running muscles a bit more recovery time.

TODAY’S PERFORMANCE

Shadowboxing: 3 Rounds

Jump Rope: 5 Rounds (16 minutes without missing a step)

iPod songs during training (custom):
1. Black Box – Ride on Time
2. Fall Out Boy – Beat It
3. Tom Jones – Sex Bomb
4. The Tragically Hip – Small Town Bringdown
5. Triumph – Lay it on the Line
6. White Lion – Broken Heart
7. Will Smith – Candy
8. Young MC – Bust a Move

TRAINING NOTE

Well, this was a semi-rest day, so there is no reason to be particularly proud or impressed with today’s performance. I was, however, a little surprised that I was able to skip rope for 16 minutes straight without missing a step. For all I know, that’s a personal best.
