BRIAN STEMMLE

TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
BRIAN STEMMLE

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who overcame a sporting accident that nearly left him dead or permanently disabled, then clawed his way back into the professional ranks and within seconds of Olympic gold.

Brian Stemmle was a member of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team from 1985 through 1999, and despite a successful career, the scene etched into the memories of many is Stemmle lying in the snow, seemingly at the brink of death on the course in Hahnenkamm. One of the world’s top ranked skiers, Stemmle had caught his skis in the netting while racing down the course during competition and the result was one of the worst crashes in professional skiing history.

Stemmle suffered massive internal injuries, with heavily damaged organs, and spent three months in the hospital followed by eighteen months of rehabilitation. It was 1989, only four years into his pro career, and Stemmle seemed to be out of the sport for good, with his sights set on the far more modest goal of living a normal and active life.

But Stemmle persevered and made his way back into the sport and into the professional ranks. He won a gold medal at the Pan Am Winter Games and placed on the podium in seven separate FIS (Federation Internationale de Ski) races, winning two golds. Over the course of his career competed in four separate Olympic Games, on one occasion skiing late in the downhill event and having an edge over the gold medal time before missing a gate in the final seconds and being disqualified.

He was inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame in 2002.
