TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
CAMMI GRANATO

I said I would make a point of not neglecting the good examples set by female athletes, and one need look no further than U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame and IIHF Hall of Fame member Cammi Granato to see one of the best.

One of the most accomplished and decorated female hockey players of all time, Cammi Granato played the game at the highest level available to her during her storied career. She captained the Americans to Olympic gold in 1998 (Nagano, Japan), and also earned a silver medal with Team USA at the 2002 games in Salt Lake City.


The sister of Tony Granato, one of the NHL’s most dedicated players, Cammi was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy in 2007 for her contributions to the sport of hockey in the United States. Past winners of this award included such legendary figures as Gordie Howe, Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman and Wayne Gretzky. She is the only woman to ever win the trophy individually. The only other time the trophy was awarded to women, it was to Granato’s gold medal-winning 1998 Olympic team.

Cammi Granato provided a face for American women aspiring to careers in competitive hockey, just when the sport began to grow and provide such opportunities. She will always be considered a legendary figure in this regard, and may legitimately be considered the Gordie Howe or Bobby Hull of women’s hockey.
