TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
CHANTAL PETITCLERC

To the right today, five-time competitor at the Paralympic Games and 21-time medalist in wheelchair racing Chantal Petitclerc. Fourteen of those medals are golds.

She won 5 gold medals at the 2004 games in Athens and 5 more at the 2008 games in Beijing, setting world records at both events.

She is also the Canadian record holder for all wheelchair racing distances from 100m to 1500m.

Her training ethic and longevity also earned her the Lou Marsh Award in 2008 as the top athlete in the country, inclusive of all sports and genders. This honor has been shared by some of the most accomplished and respected individuals in the nation’s sporting history, including Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Steve Nash and Terry Fox.

ON TO TRAINING…

Okay, day off from running today! And bloody good thing, these legs are tired, achy and stiff. But they are learning what they need to know… Well, actually, I’ll do a 5K at 8 mph just to keep the blood flowing. I need to train my mind to start thinking of 5K the way I used to think of 400m…a bite sized run.

TODAY’S PERFORMANCE

Bench Presses: 8 (115% Body Weight)
5K Run Time: 23:49

iPod songs during training run (custom):
2Pac – Pain
2Pac – Starin’ Through My Rearview
2Pac – My Block
2Pac – One Day You’ll Find Out
2Pac – Out on Bail
2Pac – Killuminati

TRAINING NOTE

I did one set of 115% my body weight to failure and got 8 reps. Haven’t been impressed with my bench presses since I started this whole thing, and even if that is poor by my standards in the past, it’s all right by the standards of this training run. I did four more sets of 115% to failure, then five more sets of 100%, then one set of 135 pounds (20 reps). I tacked on five sets of flyes on the pec deck.

For the run, I just kept the belt going at 8 mph and did an extra quarter mile or so when I had reached 5K, just to make 5K seem shorter. Worked up a sweat but fairly relaxing pace-wise.
