TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
DAN SEVERN

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is one of the founding fathers of mixed martial arts, as well as the man who first applied wrestling to MMA at a championship level. To this, he adds a competitive spirit and athleticism that defy his age, as he is still competing in professional mixed martial arts, now in his fifties.

Dan “The Beast” Severn holds one of the most impressive career records in all of MMA, both in terms of total fights and total wins. At 88-16-7, he is among the most experienced fighters on the face of the planet, and he began this experience by rising to the pinnacle of his sport.

Severn had already enjoyed a stellar wrestling career when he ventured into MMA at UFC 4, in the infancy of the sport. He had been a four-time All-American at Arizona State.

At UFC 4, he burst onto the scene by tearing through his opposition and making it all the way to the final, before finally losing to the legendary Royce Gracie. Severn then won the entire tournament at UFC 5 and became a champion.

Among the many notable victories on Dan Severn’s resume are Oleg Taktarov, David “Tank” Abbott, Paul Varelans, Ken Shamrock, Paul Buentello, Forrest Griffin, Wes Sims and Skip Hall. Severn is also a member of the UFC Hall of Fame.

TODAY: LEGS (Endurance Activity)

Hiking and Climbing: 10 Hours / 25 km (extreme elevation and loss)

TRAINING NOTES

Today was originally pencilled in as a typical leg workout: some leg presses, ham curls, squats, etc.

But sometimes life takes you in another direction and some good buddies want to do some extreme hiking and climbing. And so my original plan got scrapped and I found myself on an approximately 25k hike / climb up and down some pretty difficult terrain, at times with very limited visibility. Anyway, it went well. We got to the top, but one of my mates suffered a leg injury near the peak and the pace on the way down was slowed considerably.

At any rate, it was an entirely different type of leg workout than what I had originally set out for myself. But that’s good. I had been neglecting long endurance training almost entirely in my new training regimes, and though the goal at present is to regain mass, there’s no reason we can’t throw in some unique tests and spectacular views.
