TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
ED WHITLOCK
To the right today as a training inspiration, a dude who is 100% inspiring in his approach to life, fitness, and challenging himself with complete disregard to the year on his birth certificate.
Ed Whitlock became the oldest person ever to run a marathon in under three hours when he accomplished the feat at age 69 (in 2000). He didn’t stop there, however. The man is still running marathons and hardly losing a step as he works his way toward 80. He has extended his record by running a sub-3-hour marathon at age 74. He also holds the record for the fastest marathon by someone in the 75-79 age bracket (just over 3 hours).
The man trains in a cemetery, covering a fairly short stretch of track over and over again. Perhaps the cemetery training is what motivates him to continually defy age?
Well, my legs aren’t even defying the aging they’ve done over the last week or so. I didn’t even bother getting on the treadmill based on how they felt walking to the gym. It would have been the same aborted and anger-inducing 25-step debacle it has been as of late. Straight to the bike, to see if I can come close to yesterday’s 10-mile time.

TRAINING NOTE
Well, that was pretty reasonable for tired legs on their third straight biking day. Also, I jumped on the bike directly after waking up before eating anything, so I was going on pretty low energy. It was a sprint for the last mile, but I managed to squeak in under 27 minutes (just barely).
As for the elliptical session today, given that it followed two pretty hard 10-mile bike circuits, I was happy to set my best mark so far in this training by breaking the 500-calorie barrier for the first time (as measured by the elliptical machine). All in all, I can’t imagine my hardest 5K really being much worse than the way I push myself on this elliptical trainer for 20 minutes straight, so at the very least it is some good “soul training” a la David Goggins.
For another day where my legs are essentially too sore and worn out to properly train running, it was a decent enough performance to keep some forward momentum going.

Thanks for joining us for the Boomers & Seniors Blog Carnival. I must say, it was quite interesting to read about Mr. Whitlock. I certainly am not going to be complaining about having to walk so much! Thanks for the excellent inspiration
