They were quite possibly the hottest female band of the 1980s, giving Bananarama more than a run for their money.

In the mid 1980s, the trio of Gioia Bruno, Ann Curless and Jeanette Jurado came together and set the precedent that, for better or for worse, would pave the way for the Spice Girls and Destiny’s Childs of the future.

In 1989, the band released the album What You Don’t Know, and included within was a hard-hitting dance single of the same title. Decades later, this would be remembered as their signature song.

The catchy riffs and high production values for the era have resulted in Expose being one of the more fondly remembered and relevant pop acts of the 1980s.

The group showed an interesting pattern of utilizing different members for lead vocals on different tracks, as opposed to having a designated frontwoman. The result was that throughout their many hit singles, there is a fairly even distribution between the members of lead vocal credits. Gioia Bruno is credited with the lead vocals in the video above.

What You Don’t Know followed the 1987 album Exposure and preceded the band’s self-titled 1992 release. The following years saw a collection of Greatest Hits collections, as well as remix compilations, given how well the group’s material lent itself to samples and loops. After some time apart and the pursuit of separate ventures, the band reunited and remains together.
