TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
GARY ROBERTS

When Gary Roberts was placed on waivers at this year’s trading deadline, at the age of 42, it may have marked the end of his NHL career. Playing to 42 in today’s NHL is, in itself, a highly notable achievement.

What makes it even more incredible, however, is that Gary Roberts’ career ended for the first time — with a severe neck injury — twelve years ago.

His attempts to come back through two injury-plagued seasons from 1994-1996 earned him the league’s Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance and dedication to hockey.

After retiring for one year, he actually did make his miraculous comeback, and went on to a second career that (on its own) would have been an impressive run (the latter career involving six 20-goal seasons).

His first career had included seven 20-goal seasons, including 52 in 1991-92.

As of today, Gary Roberts stands 73rd on the all-time games played list (1,224) as well as 61st in goals (438) and 89th in points (910). Throw in a Stanley Cup, three All-Star Games and a never-say-die attitude and you have one of the great inspirations in NHL history.
