GEORGES ST. PIERRE

TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
GEORGES ST. PIERRE

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who has defined the spirit of continued drive to improve and excel over the course of his career. But we choose him as inspiration today for his equally impressive ability to smash through the pain barrier and perform at the highest level when it matters the most.

Over the course of his career, Georges St. Pierre has improved more dramatically and more continuously than any other fighter in mixed martial arts. He has only been defeated twice in over twenty fights, and in both cases, he studied his losses and rebounded with decisive victories. After losing to Matt Hughes, the legendary UFC welterweight champion, St. Pierre then went on to defeat him twice in a row and claim the UFC title. When he lost the title to Matt Serra, he dominated Serra so severely in the rematch that there was no public interest in a trilogy.

In addition to these victories, St. Pierre has also claimed wins over such MMA luminaries as B.J. Penn (twice), Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, Sean Sherk, Frank Trigg and Jason “Mayhem” Miller. He has literally walked through a who’s-who of his weight class.

Most impressive of all, perhaps was the defense of his title a few days ago at UFC 100 against Thiago Alves, an enormous welterweight who had dominated Matt Hughes even more severely than St. Pierre had. St. Pierre, in turn, dominated Alves completely, refusing to allow the challenger to win even a single round.

Why was this victory so inspiring? St. Pierre tore his right hip abductor muscle in the third round. With an injury that will have him sidelined for months and would force most fighters to retire on their stool, St. Pierre went out and continued to absolutely dominate the #1 contender for another two full five-minute rounds.

More than once I have mentioned the need to push through the pain barrier in your training. On this day, St. Pierre didn’t push through the barrier, he shattered it.
