TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
GORDIE HOWE

Today for inspiration, we need look no further than a man who showed unparalleled athletic longevity, literally defied age, played on an NHL team with his own sons, and earned himself the definitive and encapsulating nickname: Mr. Hockey.

Gordie Howe retired from the NHL as its career leader in games, goals, assists and points, the latter three records standing for decades until he was eventually overtaken by the great Wayne Gretzky. To this day, nobody has matched his mark for career games, and that isn’t even including the entire second career he had in the competitive WHA, a league whose teams were later absorbed by the NHL (including today’s Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes and Phoenix Coyotes).

He played in 1,767 NHL regular season games (2,186 including WHA) and scored 1,850 NHL points (2,358 including the WHA). His list of accolades include 4 Stanley Cups, 2 Avco Cups (the WHA’s Stanley Cup), 6 league scoring championships, 6 Hart Trophies as league MVP and 23 All-Star Games. He was named to the post-season All-Star Team 21 times, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and had his jersey #9 retired by both the Hartford Whalers and the Detroit Red Wings.

Perhaps most impressively, Howe was still playing in the NHL – at a competitive level – at the age of 52. In 1979-80, his final season, he played in all 80 games and scored 15 goals and 41 points. This longevity and level of physical fitness allowed him to play alongside two of his sons, now old enough to be professional veterans, as Gordie, Mark and Marty Howe made up the first and only NHL family ever to have two generations playing simultaneously.

Oh, and most importantly, Gordie and the previously cited Mark Howe now make up the only father-son tandem to separately earn a spot on the roster as training inspiration for Colin Timberlake.
