TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
GRANT FUHR

Today’s inspiration for giving 100% in the gym is a man who made history in several ways in the NHL.

Much as Willie O’Ree was a barrier-breaker by becoming the first black hockey player to suit up for an NHL game, decades later Grant Fuhr would open the doors to the Hockey Hall of Fame, becoming the first player of African descent to enter hockey’s greatest shrine.

Furthermore, he made the decision for the selection committee pretty damn easy.

As the goaltender for the greatest team ever assembled in NHL history, it was up to Grant Fuhr to play the highest-pressure position in the game. He won five Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers and is revered to this day as quite possibly the hardest goalie to score on when the game was on the line.

Fuhr was the owner of many 4-3 victories in an Oiler uniform. The opposing team might be able to score three in the offensively-minded 1980s, but when it was tied in the final minutes of the third period or overtime, they were never going to get that fourth goal.

Fuhr set an NHL record for goaltenders by playing 79 games in one season in 1995-96, also leading the league in that category with 75 in 1987-88. He was one of the greatest workhorse goalies in the game, on par with Martin Brodeur and Glenn Hall.

He also entered an exclusive club with 40 wins in a season in 1987-88, and set an astonishing career mark with 40 assists over the course of his career, virtually unheard of for a goaltender. He added an extra 14 in the playoffs. He won 403 regular season games and 92 more in the playoffs (to only 50 playoff losses).

There can be no question that #31 had ice water running through his veins come crunch time and knew how to bring his best game when it mattered the most.

TRAINING SONG OF THE DAY

Platinum Blonde – Crying Over You

HAMMERING THE ANVIL…

Given how much time Grant Fuhr would have spent in a thigh-burning squat in his 1,000+ regular season and playoff games, it only makes sense to make it a leg day.

TRAINING NOTES

Not bad. A decent leg day. They won’t sing songs about it in generations to come but it got the job done. Felt a little weak on the leg press but picked it up on the next exercises.

Total Sets (Legs): 21
Total Sets (Calves): 11
