TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
HENRY ALLINGHAM

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who showed many of the traits we should all aspire to, in an incredibly long and meaningful life that unfortunately ended yesterday.

Henry Allingham died at 113 as the world’s oldest man, and one of a small handful of remaining World War I veterans.

The man was known to joke that his impressive longevity was due to cigarettes, hard liquor and wild women. Naturally, all three of these can lead one to an early grave, and it was Allingham’s indomitable spirit and positive attitude that carried him through parts of three centuries.

And one can only hope to aspire to such positivity when it comes to their life and fitness goals. Is a constantly uplifting spirit absolutely necessary to get where you are going in the weight room, on the track, on the treadmill, and so on? Well, no, not a firm requirement. But it sure won’t hurt. And you will definitely make life easier for your workout partners.

All of us face difficulties in our workout regimens and in achieving our goals, but I would venture that few of us will face challenges on par with four years of World War I. And I should mention that Allingham also contributed behind the scenes in World War II. In fact, after surviving World War I, he went on to live an additional 90 years…

So today’s inspiration isn’t about the pain barrier or fighting through the negatives. It’s about appreciating the positives.
