BUSTER DOUGLAS

TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
JAMES “BUSTER” DOUGLAS

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who literally defined seizing the opportunity when it is presented.

We have looked to several men in these pages who have grabbed the moment when it came along and given the performance of their lives: Randall “Tex” Cobb, John Garrett, Joe Lauzon, Chuck Wepner, George Chuvalo and Bob Baun, just to name a few. But none defines this characteristic more than James “Buster” Douglas.

When Mike Tyson was at his destructive peak in the 1980s and early 1990s, it was taken as a fact that nobody could defeat him. It was literally not considered a realistic possibility and it was considered international news if anybody made it out of the third round with him.

When Tyson met Buster Douglas in the ring on February 11, 1990, Tyson had compiled a 37-0 record as a pro, and Douglas was billed as a 42-to-1 underdog in his title shot.

Tyson hadn’t just walked through, he had literally bulldozed the likes of Larry Holmes, Trevor Burbick, Bonecrusher Smith, Michael Spinks and Frank Bruno.

Not only was the 29-4-1 Buster Douglas expected to lose, he was expected to be knocked out in the first round. But when the ball rang, Douglas came out to fight. He didn’t just survive the first round, he took ten rounds of Mike Tyson onslaught. Then, at 1:22 of the 10th round, Douglas achieved something extraordinary.

Like many athletic feats – the four minute mile, the climbing of Everest, the quadruple axel – it was considered impossible until somebody did it. Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson. The image of Tyson slumping to the canvas in Tokyo became the biggest sports news story of the modern era, and Douglas earned his place in history.

In a very notable career, Buster Douglas, the former heavyweight champion also defeated Randall “Tex” Cobb, Trevor Burbick, Tony Tucker, Quinn Navarre and Oliver McCall.
