TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
JENS PULVER

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is none other than mixed martial arts legend and the UFC’s very first lightweight champion, “Little Evil” Jens Pulver. Pulver first rose to the pinnacle of his weight class (155 pounds) when he beat a man who was, at the time, considered unbeatable. When Pulver beat BJ Penn at UFC 35, it was arguably the MMA equivalent of Buster Douglas and Mike Tyson.

Jens Pulver also holds victories over respected fighters such as Caol Uno, Joe Stevenson and Dennis Hallman. Perhaps what is most impressive, however, is not that Pulver rose to legendary status from the sort of humble beginnings that instill focus and drive in ambitious young men.

Rather, he overcame an extraordinarily abusive household, which reached its depraved peak when his alcoholic father put a gun in young Jens’ mouth and only removed it after stating that he “wasn’t worth the bullets.”

When starting out behind the eight ball like that, it can be an incredible achievement simply to survive, and to survive without following in the footsteps before you.

To become a legend that inspires others after overcoming adversity from day one… That requires greatness.

REBUILDING THE MACHINE…

It’s been a few hard days in a row, so a somewhat easy rest day is not only deserved… I would be an idiot not to take one. If you are pushing yourself, it can sometimes be difficult to use wisdom and avoid overtraining. Today we’ll go pretty light.

INSPIRATIONAL CLIP

The following clip is the fight trailer for the first match between former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver and WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber. At the time, Pulver was undefeated at 145 pounds.

Jens Pulver ultimately lost this match against Faber, who has remained the world ranked #1 fighter in this weight class, but as always, Pulver left nothing in the Octagon. And the trailer is simply too kick-ass to ignore. Fight like a legend, not like a guy who just started.
