TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
JIMMY BRADDOCK
Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who has inspired more than a few people over the years, and that goes back to well before his story being told in Cinderella Man.
Braddock finished his career with a good but not superhuman Rocky-Balboa-like record of 46-23-4-2. But like Rocky Balboa, the numbers alone didn’t tell the whole story.
Many a fighter has compiled a .650-or-so winning percentage and retired with little fanfare and not been remembered by anyone outside his immediate family. In Braddock’s case, the manner in which he accumulated his victories (and his losses) has rightfully become the stuff of legend.
With a stellar record over his first 45 fight or so, Braddock piled up the majority of his losses during a period when he suffered recurring hand fractures and also had limited time to train. This all followed an early peak when he had received a title shot and gone the distance in the fight, narrowly losing to Tommy Loughran.
Braddock stepped away from the fight game, but was given the opportunity for an unlikely comeback when he was penciled in as the stepping stone for up-and-comer Corn Griffin. Expected to be quickly dispatched and an aging checkmark for Griffin’s resume, Braddock shocked the boxing world by knocking Griffin out in the third round.
After two more victories, Braddock had cemented his comeback and was given a second title shot, this time against the seemingly indestructible Max Baer (also an earlier training inspiration). A pair of deaths in the ring had been linked to the punishment inflicted from Baer’s fists, and Braddock found himself once again the underdog. Braddock’s granite chin and ability to weather punishment served him well and he edged out Baer, winning the title with a unanimous decision.
The Cinderella story was complete and the Cinderella Man was a champion.
As a post-script, Braddock would also fight the great Joe Louis, losing but scoring a knockdown in the process. He also served in World War II and was enshrined in several Boxing Halls of Fame, including the International, Ring, World and New Jersey halls.
