TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
MARTINA NAVRATILOVA
Today’s inspiration is a woman who has not only become the most decorated player in the history of tennis, but a woman who has seemingly defied the limitations of age in the process.
Over the course of her career, she won 18 Grand Slam singles titles and added another 31 in doubles, plus another 10 in mixed doubles.
This included a remarkable 9 Wimbeldon singles titles. Her doubles team with Pam Shriver won 109 matches in a row.
Perhaps most impressively, while born in 1956, she played professional tennis until 2006, her fiftieth year. In a sport where the age bracket is much closer to figure skating and gymnastics, even playing into one’s mid-30s is an unusual show of longevity. Playing until the age of 50 is literally unheard of.
When she won a match at Wimbledon in 2004 (age 47), she became the oldest player to win a professional singles match. With 167 top-level singles titles and 177 in doubles, her career has been unparalleled. I could keep going, but…
In addition to her physical accomplishments, Navratilova is also a health and fitness author, having published Shape Your Self in 2006.
