TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION: MATT HAMILL

For inspiration today, we look to a man who has made his way nearly to the pinnacle of his sport, despite enduring a very significant disability for the entirety of his career.

Matt Hamill proved himself to be among the elite deaf athletes in the world, when as an amateur wrestler, he became a three-time NCAA Division III champion and then competed in the all-hearing-impaired Deaflympics (formerly the World Games for the Deaf). He secured a gold medal in freestyle wrestling and a silver in Greco-Roman at the 2001 Deaflympics (which, dating back to 1924, are actually the longest-running multi-sports competition other than the Olympics themselves).

Following his success as a wrestler, Hamill entered the world of mixed martial arts and during his time in the sport to date, has amassed a 6-2 record and earned hiimself a spot in the upper tier of the UFC’s Light Heavyweight division (205 pounds). To date, his only two losses are to former champion Rich Franklin and a controversial loss to current title contender Michael Bisping (a fight that the public generally agreed Hamill had won).

Any familiarity with mixed martial arts will make evident the highly significant disadvantaged posed by being unable to hear the directions and advice being shouted from one’s own corner. Nonetheless, Hamill has thrived despite his disability. He was considered a favorite to win the third season of The Ultimate Fighter and after an early victory, was on track to do just that before having to withdraw from the competition with a training injury. Hamill holds notable wins over Tim “the Barbarian” Boetsch and Seth Petruzelli (the man who knocked out Kimbo Slice in 14 seconds to silence his marketing machine).
