TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
MIKE MENTZER

Today’s inspiration is a man who very much defined the golden age of bodybuilding. An innovator whose philosophies are heavily followed to this day, Mike Mentzer typified the elite athletes of his era with his inspiration, scientific approach and self-experimentation in the weight room.

Constantly striving for methods that would allow him to achieve ever-higher levels of strength and muscular development, Mentzer authored theories of muscular development, tested them, and often achieved the result of making both himself – and the bodybuilding world as whole – wiser for his efforts.

The creativity, drive and work ethic of Mentzer culminated in a Mr. Universe victory in 1978, after two strong second-place finishes in the previous years. In 1979, he was the over-200 pound winner of the Mr. Olympia competition, only finishing second overall because he was up against the legendary Frank Zane in the under-200 category to determine the overall champion.

After another strong 5th place finish in the controversial 1980 Mr. Olympia event, won by Arnold Schwarzenegger in his highly publicized comeback, Mentzer retired from active competition, but not before having made a noteworthy and memorable – and arguably revolutionary – impact on the bodybuilding scene.

The bodybuilding profession and community suffered a tragic loss when Mentzer passed away in 2001, just hours after completing a workout video. Though he had long been retired from competition, his absence was strongly felt in gyms and workout circles across the globe.

HAMMERING THE ANVIL…

As Mentzer often cautioned against overtraining and insufficient rest in many instances, it makes sense to honor him with – if not a day off – a pretty light day.
