The MMA Mental Hall of Fame: Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett

Mixed martial arts has had its share of head cases, but not too many of them are able to boast that they’ve faced a who’s who of world class fighters in their weight division.

It’s all the more perplexing that a man who has squared off against Duane Ludwig, Takanori Gomi, Urijah Faber, Tatsuya Kawajiri and KJ Noons in a long career has been unable to maintain any sort of rational behavior outside the cage. Then again, a quick look at his antics inside the cage might shed a little bit of light on this colorful character.

It becomes quickly evident after watching a few Krazy Horse matches that he likes to equally distribute his time during a fight between inside the ring or cage, and atop the fence or standing on the turnbuckle. While certainly one of the most altitude-inclined fighters in the MMA world, there almost appears to a semblance of logic to this tendency when he baits opponents into a front push-kick as he rests against the corner with the clock running.

And here is a glimpse of the man, in his own words, outside the ring. He fights them all: men, women, children, retarded people. It doesn’t matter…

Despite consistently showing a great deal of talent and athleticism in his bouts, Bennett’s often disrespectful antics and frequent legal and criminal problems outside the ring (with charges ranging from drug dealing to assault to false imprisonment) have played a large role in impeding his career in mainstream MMA.

This is especially the case as modern professional mixed martial arts has largely taken on a character component, with mainstream fighters recognizing and even embracing their stature as role models. Though Krazy Horse may not have adopted that position so heartily, he has at least always embraced his role as an entertainer.
