TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
NEAL BROTEN
Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who was a key part of some of the most improbable underdog stories in hockey history.
Of all the players who were on the roster for the 1980 Miracle on Ice, Neal Broten probably went on to the greatest success as a hockey player.
He was part of the ragtag group of college kids that did the seemingly impossible by winning Olympic Gold in 1980, despite facing the seemingly indestructible Soviets in the semifinals.
But that was just the beginning of the story for Broten. In 1981, he became the first-ever winner of the Hobey Baker Award as the top college player in the United States, then joined the Minnesota North Stars for their surprise run to the 1981 Stanley Cup Finals.
Broten became a scoring star in the NHL, with an incredible 76-assist and 105-point season in 1985-86. This was one of many great years in a career that saw him score 289 goals and 923 points in 1,099 games.
In 1991, he again made a major contribution as the North Stars enjoyed another Cinderella run to the Stanley Cup Finals. When it was all said and done, Broten had scored 35 goals and 98 points in his NHL playoff career.
