TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
SAKU KOIVU

For inspiration today we look to one of the NHL’s most inspiring figures in recent times.

Forget for a moment that Saku Koivu has won ice hockey medals for Finland at three separate Olympics and that he became the first European captain of the storied Montreal Canadians a decade ago (an honor that he still holds).

Koivu became an even more powerful role model in 2001, when he was diagnosed with cancer (non-Hodgkins lymphoma). After being expected to miss the entire season due to illness and treatment, Koivu returned for the finish of the season and was the team’s leader in the playoffs.

Koivu has since continued his career at top form, being one of the Canadiens’ best players every year since (and continuing through today). And this is despite suffering a detached retina from a high stick in 2006, leaving Koivu with limited peripheral vision.

The bravery and leadership shown by this man during the most trying of times has not gone unnoticed by his teammates, opponents, league officials or the fans, and he has rightfully been decorated with some of the highest honors available in the game.

Koivu has been awarded both the Masterton Trophy (for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey) and the King Clancy Trophy (for leadership on and off the ice), further adding to his legacy.

TRAINING NOTES

Today was originally envisioned as a chest and back day. But by the time I was done chest (and maybe even a little before), I could tell I had nothing left. If I had started to do lat pulls, it would have been a wasted back day. Maybe half the normal benefit and back would have been put at the end of the rotation again, and that was no way to address a weak point.

Supersetted flyes and overhead dumbbell raise, as usual.

Total Sets (Chest): 27
