TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
JARI KURRI

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man whose virtually unparalleled prowess in the game of hockey went a long way toward legitimizing European players in an era where it was difficult for them to break into the NHL and garner respect around the league.

Jari Kurri skated his way into the Hockey Hall of Fame by winning five Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers and being the sniper largely responsible for Wayne Gretzky’s phenomenal assists totals.

The greatest player ever to emerge from Finland, Kurri played 17 NHL seasons, appearing in 1,251 games while scoring 601 goals and 1,398 points.

He led the league with 68 goals in 1985-86, and enjoyed a career season in 1984-85, scoring 71 goals and 135 points, one of the greatest seasons in the history of the game.

Kurri would go down as one of the truly great playoff performers of all time, scoring 106 goals and 233 points in 200 career playoff games, placing him near the very top of the all-time charts.

He also played in two Olympics and eight All-Star Games.

TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
PAUL COFFEY

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who not only achieved things no defenseman had ever done in NHL history, but whose love for the game and competition meant he had to practically be dragged kicking and screaming from the ice to end his career.

Some lament that the career of a player as great as Paul Coffey ended with him being traded from team to team and eventually being a healthy scratch from his team’s lineup. Ultimately, he only retired when he was sent to the minors and cleared waivers.

But such a series of events only testifies to the man’s love for competition and desire to do what he loved: play NHL hockey for as long as he possibly could.

Coffey won four Stanley Cups with two teams: the Edmonton Oilers dynasty and the Pittsburgh Penguins mini-dynasty.

His 48 goals from the blueline in 1985-86 still stand as an NHL record, unequalled even by Bobby Orr. His 9 shorthanded goals also stand as a record. His 138 points that season as a defenseman is the second best ever, only one behind Orr’s 139. He was, at one time, the all-time NHL leader in goals, assists and points for defensemen.

On March 14, 1986 he set another record that still holds. He scored 8 points (2 goals and 6 assists) in a single game.

Coffey was a first-ballot Hall of Famer, entering with Ray Bourque and Larry Murphy, two other dominant defensemen from his era. Coffey retired with 396 goals, 1135 assists and 1531 points in 1409 games. He was just as good in the playoffs: 59 goals and 196 points in 194 games.

These playoff totals include a record 37 points by a defenseman in the 1985 playoffs (en route to the Stanley Cup). With 12 goals and 25 assists in 18 games, he was over two points-per game that post-season, the type of ratio normally reserved only for players with the last name Gretzky or Lemieux.

He won three Norris Trophies as the NHL’s best defenseman and played in 14 All-Star Games.

TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
CHRIS PRONGER

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who, just yesterday, played a critical role in powering what could go down as the greatest comeback in the history of sports.

Only twice in all the years of the NHL has a team gone down three games to zero in a playoff series, then come back to win the series 4-3. It has happened once in baseball history, and never in basketball.

Chris Pronger had already enjoyed a stellar year, playing a key role on the blue line as Canada won the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

To his storied season, he has added the reality-defying comeback from 3-0 as the Philadelphia Flyers rallied back from that deficit to oust the Boston Bruins from the playoffs.

Pronger has been in the position to represent his country at the Olympics and suit up for the playoffs due to a remarkable and consistent career that has seen him earn a reputation as one of the most dogged competitors in the game of hockey.

This season, he was one of the NHL’s top scorind defensemen with 55 points, and has to date accumulated 661 points in 1,104 career games over 16 NHL seasons.

He won the Stanley Cup in 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks, one year after leading Edmonton to game seven of the Finals.

In 2000 with the St. Louis Blues, he won both the Norris Trophy as the best defenseman in the NHL and the Hart Trophy as the league MVP.

TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
CHARLIE HUDDY

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who specialized, on possibly the greatest team ever assembled in professional sports, in the most hard-working and uncelebrated role available on the roster: the stay-at-home defenseman, charged with keeping pucks out of his own net while Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri and Glenn Anderson skated their way into the Hall of Fame with their scoring exploits.

Today’s training inspiration: Charlie Huddy.

Huddy was no slouch himself when it came to the scoring game, putting 20 pucks in the net from the blueline in the 1982-83 season and earning a place as one of the best scoring defensemen that year. More importantly, however, he led the entire league in +/- with +62 (on the ice for 62 more even strength goals by his team than against his team).

This was one of the three consecutive seasons where he was +50 or better, and he would finish his career at +241, one of the all-time NHL leaders in the category.

In 1,017 games, Huddy scored 99 goals and 453 points, and was even better in the playoffs. In 1984-85, he had 20 points in his 18 playoff games, one of the league’s best playoff scorers – defenseman or forward.

In total, he had 85 points in 183 playoff games and won five Stanley Cups in a legendary seven-year-stretch with the Edmonton Oilers where he was one of the key pieces in the roster.

TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
ANDY MOOG

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who, along with Glenn Resch, is widely regarded as one of the two greatest backup goaltenders to ever skate on NHL ice.

Excelling in a role that required the ultimate team player mindset, Andy Moog would backstop the Edmonton Oilers to record seasons during the 1980s, splitting the season down the middle with Grant Fuhr. Come playoff time, however, the glory would go to Fuhr and Moog would usually be sitting on the bench.

Like Resch, however, Moog carved out a reputation for excellence and the day came when he was sought after as one of the league’s top starting goalies. The Boston Bruins traded for Moog in 1987 and they were quickly rewarded. In his first season with the Bruins, Moog led the team to the Stanley Cup Finals. He did the same again two years later.

Moog played in 713 games (21st all-time) over 18 seasons, earning 372 victories (14th all-time) against only 209 losses and 88 ties. He had eleven seasons with 20 wins or more, including 37 in 1992-93, his final year with the Bruins.

To go with his two finals appearances in Boston, he won three Stanley Cups with the Oilers and posted a stellar 68-57 record in 132 career playoff games.
