The first seven editions of “20 Songs for Lifting Weights” series (links at the bottom) have been pretty popular, I have been happy to see.

It had been a while since Volume 6, so in conjunction with Volume 7, we’re going to double up and toss in 20 more decent tracks to get you through your gym session.

So, from my iPod to yours, her are another 20 songs for your playlist, making 140 (so far).

They’ve been getting me through some tough workouts and I hope they can help you through yours when you need that extra push.

20 SONGS for LIFTING WEIGHTS – PART VI

The first five editions of “20 Songs for Lifting Weights” series (links at the bottom of the post) have been pretty popular (thanks for the feedback) and I am on my way for a late workout and – tired as I am – thought I might benefit from a bit of fresh blood on the iPod playlist.

As a result, I sat down and added another 20 songs from the library to the Anvil of Crom workout playlist that I am using for the current, fairly grueling regime. By the time I am on the 25th set of legs, I am pretty happy for every little bit of adrenaline I can muster.

So from my iPod to yours, her are another 20 songs for your playlist, making 120 so far, enough to get through more than a couple solid workouts.

The first four installments of my “20 Songs for Lifting Weights” series (links at the bottom of the post) have been pretty popular, so I am bringing out Part 5.

20 SONGS for LIFTING WEIGHTS – PART IV

Well, we all know that the right music can go a long way for enhancing your motivation or sometimes even synthesizing it from zero. There’s been more than a few times that I’ve needed to call on the iPod to get through the last couple of sets on a tough day, and of course keeping the songs going is also a good way to time your rests in between sets.

Upon providing the original 20 Songs for Lifting Weights Playlist and the sequels with Part II and Part III, I have needed to add a new 20 to my repertoire and here they are…

This will bring the grand total to 60 songs that will serve you well in the weight room when you need to dig deep for that extra pump.

So here are 20 more songs for your iPod workout playlist that will be your “performance enhancer” when you need to power through one more rep of the bench press, squeeze out the last bicep curl, or make it back up to the top of the squat rack.

20 SONGS for LIFTING WEIGHTS – PART II

Well, not long ago I put together the original 20 Songs for Lifting Weights Playlist. But due to the extremely long sets and fairly long breaks during the Anvil of Crom training period, I am going through songs a little quicker than I planned and wearing them out pretty fast. If a few of them aren’t working for me on a given day, I end up recycling the same few more than I would like.

So I went back to the computer and put together an additional 20 songs for the weightlifting playlist. Here they are, from my iPod to yours…

20 SONGS for LIFTING WEIGHTS

Well, I have been doing some pretty taxing training as of late, and with my two minute rests between sets and my iPod or party shuffle, I am literally spending most of those two minutes skipping crappy songs and getting annoyed, rather than resting and focusing and prepping for the next and more intense set. This is especially not a good use of my energy in the current Anvil of Crom training period.

So I went into iTunes and took a few minutes now to save myself countless minutes and premature grey hairs listening to crappy music in between sets. I custom-crafted a 20-song playlist to get me through the tough sets and I’m sharing it. From my iPod to yours, here’s some good weightlifting music.

Day 35…that means I’m 5 weeks into training for the 5K Pump and Run at the Arnold Classic. And the race itself is 8 days away, so I guess my relatively sudden and ad lib training program is exactly 6 weeks, with the race the next day…

Week 5 was a week of sore backs and very little running. I did, however, focus on cross-training to keep momentum going and continue the gains. All in all, I think I did pretty much everything I could under the circumstances. And it was good to add some new elements to the cardio sessions. I’m getting kind of scrawny now, though.

DAILY PERFORMANCE

The following chart covers my performance from day to day, with gains and setbacks…plenty of both. You can pretty much mark the moment where my legs got tired and my back gave out…but the hell with that. I can certainly man up for 8 days.

The following measures (and aspects of the training) are, in order:
- 5K Run
- 10K run
- Maximum Reps in one set of 100% Body Weight on bench press
- The Same for 115% Body Weight
- 10 Miles on a Stationary Bike (with resistance at 15/25)
- 20 Minutes on an Elliptical Trainer (with incline and resistance both at 10/10) and the readout measuring “Calories Burned” as the metric of performance

* Personal Bests for this training session are boldfaced and underlined

Well it wasn’t that long ago that I began training for the 5K Pump and Run at the Arnold Classic, but time has flown by and so…28 Days Later…I am at the end of Week 4.

It’s been four weeks of speed gains, speed losses due to overwork, strength gains, getting a little scrawny by my standards due to all this damn running…and it has also been four weeks of some pretty good tunes. As you can see, I’ve kept a log of all the songs that have come up in the training and helped propel the feet to the end of their 5K run or 10-mile bike or whatever the element of training might be.

In addition to the bench-press specific chest training — for the PUMP element of the pump and run — I have been using a handful of distances and exercises for the cardio and endurance portion of the contest. In no particular order: 10K runs, 10-mile cycling, 20 minute sessions on a high-incline and high-resistance elliptical machine (burning maximum calories in 20 minutes on the readout), and of course actual 5K runs.

Week three saw a lot of cross training instead of running due to my having worn my running legs out badly in the first two weeks. Week four saw me ease back into the running as I begin to see race day at the end of the tunnel.
