TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
OLEG TAKTAROV

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who was one of the pioneering stars of mixed martial arts, and one of the first men to bring Russian Sambo to the forefront of modern cross-disciplinary martial arts competition.

Oleg Taktarov, known as the Russian Bear, was one of the most competitive fighters of the early UFC era, and after accumulating a 3-0 MMA record in the Russian White Dragon competition, burst onto the scene at UFC 5 in 1995, earning a spot in the semi-finals before losing to eventual tournament champion and UFC Hall of Famer Dan Severn.

Showing no shortage of heart or presence of mind, Taktarov fought gamely and calmly despite taking a savage beating from Severn.

Taktarov then returned for UFC 6, and defeated Dave Beneteau, Anthony Macias and David “Tank” Abbott en route to becoming the tournament champion.

In addition, Taktarov fought Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock to a draw, and also holds victories over Mark Kerr and Marco Ruas. The Russian Bear has a career professional MMA record of 16-5-2.
