Guy Lafleur was drafted 1st overall in the 1971 NHL entry draft and lived up to every bit of his youthful promise.

He played an entire 14-year career with the Montreal Canadiens before retiring and coming back for a three-year stint with the New York Rangers and Quebec Nordiques.

Lafleur led the NHL in scoring for three straight years between 1975 and 1978, during a stretch where he scored 119 or more points for six straight seasons.

He led the league in game winning goals four times, goals once, assists once, and plus / minus once. During the 1977-78 season, he led the league with +73 (on the ice for 73 more even strength goals scored by his team than against) and that phenomenal number wasn’t even his best total. The year before, he was +89, part of a five year stretch where he was +50 or better in each and every season.

He retired with a career +453, the 8th best total of all-time. He also would be among the league’s career leaders in points (1,353), goals (560), assist (793) and games played (1,126).

He was equally impressive in the playoffs, with 58 goals and 134 points in 128 games, playing a pivotal role in leading the Montreal Canadiens to five Stanley Cups.

TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
RON TUGNUTT

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who put on what is considered by many to be the single most awesome goaltending display in modern hockey history.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Ron Tugnutt was a talented goaltender cursed with minding the net for the worst team in the NHL by a country mile. The Quebec Nordiques of this era were pitiful, assured year after year of finishing last in the league and selecting first overall in the NHL entry draft.

It is through the suffering of Ron Tugnutt that the team eventually accumulated enough draft picks to build the Stanley Cup winning team of the late 1990s.

The weight Tugnutt had to bear, as well as his skill between the pipes, were both never more evident than on March 21, 1991, when Tugnutt was blistered with 73 shots, of which he stopped 70 to earn a tie with the powerhouse Boston Bruins. It was the second most saves ever by an NHL goaltender, and one of the greatest performances the game had ever seen.

Tugnutt would go on to play 537 games over 16 seasons in the NHL, earning 186 wins and 26 shutouts for eight different teams.

His 1.79 goals against average in 43 games with the Ottawa Senators in 1998-99 led the entire NHL, confirming that his inflated goals against numbers during his Quebec years were the product of a pitiful team that allowed countless quality scoring chances.

TODAY: DAY OFF

NO EXERCISES

TRAINING NOTES

Total Sets (Body): Zero

It seems odd to talk about the insane workload of Ron Tugnutt and then take a day off from the workouts, but they have to happen sometime. Rest and recover.

Even Ron’s backup goalie saw occasional action with the Nordiques.

Joe Sakic announced his retirement today, ending an illustrious 20-year career that saw him achieve virtually everything that is possible in the game, all of it due not only to a rare gift of talent, but to a tireless work ethic.

<!--

His accomplishments are too numerous to list in their entirety, but Sakic retires as the sixth all-time leading scorer in NHL history with 1679 points. He is one of only a few players ever to get 1,000 assists, with a total of 1036 (7th all time).

Twelve All-Star Games. Two Stanley Cups. Six 100-point seasons. Post-season 1st All-Star Team three times. League MVP in 2001. Playoff MVP in 1996.

He also retires as one of the league’s all-time great postseason pressure performers, with 188 points, placing him at 7th on the list, even ahead of playoff legends like Bryan Trottier, Steve Yzerman, Mario Lemieux and Ray Bourque. In fact, he is the league’s 2nd all-time leading playoff scorer among players who were not part of the 1980s Edmonton Oilers dynasty, behind only Brett Hull.
