TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
TITO ORTIZ
You can call him whatever you like — an arrogant jerk, a shameless self-promoter — but whatever your opinion of Tito Ortiz personally, the man works hard and he learns from his mistakes.
In 1999, Tito Ortiz faced MMA legend Frank Shamrock in the UFC Octagon. While a talented fighter, Ortiz had neglected his cardio training and gassed in the fight, ultimately tapping out to strikes in the fourth round.
Many a fighter would have simply said, “I guess cardio isn’t my thing” and simply hoped their future fights ended in the first round (see Tank Abbott, for example).
But Ortiz wanted to be a champion. He took his weak spot and made it his strength.
Ortiz began a rigorous endurance regimen that has continued ever since, and not since 1999 has he ever gassed in a fight. Any opponent now facing Ortiz knows that the best he can hope for is a stalemate in the endurance category, as Ortiz now sets the standard among light heavyweights in mixed martial arts.
Tito Ortiz has since gone on to defeat such MMA greats as Forrest Griffin, Evan Tanner and Ken Shamrock (three times).
REBUILDING THE MACHINE…
Today is a chest day, and I’m not going to push it too hard. I pretty much just want to hold ground while my legs and lats catch back up to where they should be. Then it can be full steam ahead on all fronts.

TRAINING NOTES
Supersetted Flyes and Overhead Dumbbell Raise
I didn’t plan for a crazy chest day because this was one of the areas where I have held my ground with all my distance training. The rest of me has to play catch up right now. But I found myself struggling with some pretty light weights, so maybe I’m giving myself too much credit and I’ve just lost ground across the board. Regardless, today was a bit of a rest day by comparison to the hardcore training of the last few.
