TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
JAY CUTLER
Pictured to the right for today’s role model is the man who symbolizes perseverance, and when I say perseverance, I mean long term perseverance.
You are looking at two-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler (not to be confused with the NFL quarterback).
For years, Jay Cutler finished 2nd at Mr. Olympia (the world’s premier bodybuilding competition, though many will also make a valid argument for the Arnold Classic as the premier event). He sat on the sidelines as Ronnie Coleman collected the prize for a record 8 consecutive years (a longer streak than Arnold Schwarzenegger himself).
Year in and year out, Jay Cutler flexed and smiled and collected his silver medal.
Finally, in 2006, after a period of time that would have broken the will of most men, he surpassed Coleman and collected his first-ever Mr. Olympia title. He repeated the feat in 2007.
To these two victories, the pinnacle of the bodybuilding profession, Jay has also added three 1st Place titles at the Arnold Classic (2002-04), as well as victories at the Ironman Pro Invitational, the IFBB Night of Champions, and the Dutch, British, Romanian and Austrian Grand Prix.
ON TO TRAINING…
Okay, well, it is Superbowl Sunday and that gives me the excuse I need to make myself take a day off the 5K. I was actually unhappy enough with my 19:52 yesterday that I went and ran a second one. It was even slower, but it was good punishment for not going at max speed. Today, it will just be a bench day.

TODAY’S PERFORMANCE
Bench Presses: 16
TRAINING NOTE
Hmmm, I would have liked to be up closer to 20. But what can you do, I only had 16 in me today. We’ll see what happens next time. I also only took one day off since the last bench press test, which wouldn’t have helped matters for my performance today.
After my first set of 16, I did 4 more sets of five to six reps (decreasing as I got more tired) and then one set of ten at 135 pounds to squeeze out the last of what I had left. Then five sets of flat flyes. That was today’s chest workout. Pretty simple stuff. I think on the next chest day, I’ll follow this up with some incline press and another augmenting exercise or two.
INSPIRATIONAL CLIP
We’re going old school, right back to 1979. The Rocky II training montage.
