TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
CHRIS CHELIOS
To the right today, Chris Chelios, the “Rocky 6 of the NHL.” The oldest player in the NHL, Chelios is still bringing game at 47 years old, something that has been considered an impossibility since the days of Gordie Howe.
With three Norris Trophies (defenseman of the year) and three Stanley Cups, his place in the Hall of Fame is assured not only because of his skills, but because of the longevity produced by his legendary training regimen. By all accounts, his fitness level is unparalleled in the league.
As legend has it, during the missed NHL season due to the 2004-05 lockout, when most fortysomethings might take advantage of a year of strike pay by…gardening or lawn bowling or getting hair plugs…Chris Chelios became a competitive bobsledder. It all makes sense when you consider the fact that this man has now been a hard-driving and unstoppable athlete for over three decades.
With 948 career points, he is on the verge of becoming one of the extremely rare defenseman who gets to 1,000, which would put him in very elite company with the likes of Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque and Denis Potvin. Few players have equalled his totals of 11 All-Star Games or 7 post-season All-Star Team selections.
Likewise, with 1644 games played he leads all active NHL players in the regard (and is 4th on the all-time list). Likewise, he leads all active players with 2891 penalty minutes, placing the gritty blueliner 12th on the all-time NHL list.
ON TO TRAINING…
Today begins the second week of training for the 5K Pump and Run. I am kind of hopeful that today is the day I keep the treadmill spinning at 10 mph for the entire 5K (3.13 miles) but I can feel a little bit of fatigue in those quads after seven straight days of 5K. We’ll see what happens when I get on there.
TODAY’S PERFORMANCE
5K Run Time: 19:52
Bench Presses: 14
iPod songs during the training run (custom):
1. R. Kelly / Ludacris / Kid Rock – Rock Star
2. Madonna – Like a Prayer (Gospel Prayer – Guyom’s Lady M Show)
3. R. Kelly / Ludacris / Kid Rock – Rock Star
4. Tangerine Dream – Love on a Real Train
5. R. Kelly / Ludacris / Kid Rock – Rock Star
TRAINING NOTE
Wow, today was not the day! I had to go to the music almost immediately and it was a struggle to keep running at 10 mph for just the first 1.5 miles. After that, it was 9 mph for the entire rest of the way. I felt lucky to come in under 20:00.
My legs had nothing, but it was such a struggle today that it did feel like something of a moral victory. Sometimes you train your body, and sometimes you train your will. It was not a good performance by the body today, but I think I strengthened my will a little bit in case it gets tested on competition day. I’ll take it…
As for the bench presses, I don’t know what happened there. Inexcusable.
INSPIRATIONAL CLIP
For today’s inspirational clip, I’m just going to throw up a classic, in honor of Chris Chelios (and also the recent comeback of Claude Lemieux).

Hi Colin-
I like you’re writing and will be coming here to read more. I also love your taste in music.
Keep up the good work.
I’m curious what kind of training plan you have for your 5K and 10K improvement?

Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words.
Good question, given that time is short, I am trying to determine a good 5K-specific approach. In the meantime, I am just doing my best 5K pretty much every day and a comprehensive bench press day every 3rd day for the lifting part of the race.
5K has leveled so I think I’m overdue for a day off on that front…
Going as fast as you can every time you run is a recipe for a nice plateau, as you might be finding now. You have some talent, so I’d love to see you actually training to improve on that time (if that’s what you want). That would involve some slower, longer running and some faster shorter intervals.
Of couse– you might not want to do that for this speed-pump race (or whatever it’s called), but for maybe next time… I’m just saying.
Well, looks like it’s time to mix up the routine and since I’m a little bit out of my element with this distance running thing, I shall defer to the experts. Working on a couple revisions to the current program.
