Underappreciated Actors: Ellen Sandweiss

The end credits of some of the great films, the opening credits of some of the great television shows, and even the annual list of Oscar nominees are often filled with the names of actors that the general public will scarcely recognize, though these actors undoubtedly contributed greatly to their viewing experience.

For every Russell Crowe or Mel Gibson there is a Burt Young (Rocky), a James Cosmo (Braveheart), a Robert Davi (License to Kill), an Al Waxman (Cagney and Lacey) and many more.

In this case, we have Ellen Sandweiss, a talented actress who is best known for her work as the female lead in The Evil Dead, the first notable film in the career of acclaimed director Sam Raimi (Spiderman 1, 2 and 3). Sandweiss had, in fact, appeared in Sam Raimi’s very first experimental piece, Within the Woods, a short film put together on Super 8 in the late 1970s. This film, like the entire Evil Dead and Spiderman series, also starred Bruce Campbell.

Ellen Sandweiss used her Evil Dead success to develop a career as a horror film queen, one that continues to this day, as she revived her passion for acting in 2005, appearing in several straight-to-DVD films across from such horror stalwarts as Felissa Rose, Gunnar Hansen (the original Leatherface), Dee Wallace and David Carradine.

At present, she is participating as the lead in Dangerous Women, a series developed specifically for the web. It will be interesting to see how the internet model for a dramatic series pans out, though it shows some promise for the genre that talent with some level of name recognition is getting involved.
