TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
VALERI KHARLAMOV
Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who became one of Russia’s greatest hockey players in a hard-driving and militaristic system that reigned during the Cold War era.
Twice named the MVP of the Soviet league and the bearer of two Olympic gold medals and one silver, Valeri Kharlamov is one of only two players in the Hockey Hall of Fame who never played in the NHL and played their entire career behind the Iron Curtain. The other is his longtime teammate Vladislav Tretiak.
Kharlamov was not only a scoring star for the Soviets. He played with a virtually unparalleled degree of heart and his willingness to play through pain in quest of victory was legendary.
He was the star player for the Soviets in the legendary 1972 Summit Series against Canada, considered by many to be the definitive hockey contest in the history of the sport.
His ankle was broken in game six of the eight-game series by a slash from Bobby Clarke. Amazingly, Kharlamov finished the game with his broken ankle. He was unable to play in game seven due to the injury, but actually returned to the ice for game eight.
Some of the greatest Russian players in the NHL today still choose his jersey #17 as their own number in honor of his contributions to the game.
