TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
YOSHIHISA HOSAKA

To the left today, recent world record-setter and a man who seems utterly ignorant to the fact that he is in his 60s: Yoshihisa Hosaka. Mr. Hosaka recently set the mark for fastest marathon by a person 60 or older with a 2:36:30 performance in the Beppu-Oita Mainichi marathon in Japan.

Like Ed Whitlock, he is another example of people telling age and the ravages of time to go suck it.

Well, today I am going to be running like a far less fit 60-year-old. I am finally feeling half able to run more than a few meters today, so I’ll keep pushing myself once I get past those first few painful steps and try to pick up where I left off a week ago.

TRAINING NOTE

Today, it was just about letting the legs know that their running days are not over. They can’t simply whine and complain their way out of the rest of training. It had been about a week since I had even lightly jogged anything more than 25 steps, so…sore as the legs may be, it was time to put them through a mile to get the train back on the tracks.

It hurt like hell for the first minute or so, but then the legs loosened up…for two minutes. The last three minutes, they hurt like hell again. But it was a fast enough pace to count as training…just not enough of a run to really be significant against the backdrop of the ultimate goal.

A few hours later, I figured I would continue the “easing back in” process with a not-overly-challenging 5K. I decided that I would run it but always keep myself just short of where it felt like I was “trying.” I stuck to my guns and didn’t push myself into the discomfort zone. But had I decided to cross the line and “give it,” I really don’t think I would have gone much faster than my 25:03 today.

I was pleasantly surprised, though, when I stepped onto the elliptical trainer later in the day for my maximum 20-minute performance test and set a personal best for this training run so far (508.2 calories burned).
