TODAY’S TRAINING INSPIRATION:
YUTAKA FUKUFUJI

Today’s Colin Timberlake Training Inspiration is a man who made history when he became the first Japanese-born hockey player to suit up for an NHL game.

Yutaka Fukufuji had paid his dues for several years in the minors, toiling in the ECHL and AHL before getting the call to start in goal for the Los Angeles Kings during the 2006-2007 season.

He had already become the first Japanese citizen to be drafted by an NHL team as a goaltender, and only the second Japanese player to be drafted at all, and in 2006-2007, he took it to the next level and appeared in four games in the big league.

This set a new standard for Japanese hockey players, as the only other Japanese player ever drafted was Hiroyuki Miura (by Montreal in 1992) and he never played a game in the NHL.

The season after his newsworthy NHL appearances, Fukufuji played 46 games while starting for the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL, posting 18 wins, his best total since a career year with 27 victories in 2004-05. He repeated his 18-win performance in 2008-09, but required only 35 games to reach that total.

As of this writing, he has shown a strong tendency to post victories in the AHL and ECHL, with a combined career record of 95-60-11.
